The Latest Public School Enrollment Trends, Courtesy of Burbio

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on education, and the impact continues to play out. Here is a summary of some recent data on recent public school enrollment trends from Burbio, a data service company that aggregates information on a variety of different industries and organizations.

At the national level, public school enrollment in city districts has dropped significantly compared to last year, while the other three major locales (Rural, Suburb, and Town) have seen a moderate to significant increase. Many states seem to be experiencing the same drop in their city schools.

At the national level, there is significant growth in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 9th Grade, but slight decreases in all other grades. This data varies slightly from state to state, but the growth trend for the three grades previously mentioned are quite similar.

Many schools are using their allocated ESSER III funds to encourage student re-engagement and better care for students with various needs.

The key takeaways:

  • City public schools are seeing a drop in enrollment nationwide.
  • Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 9th grade are–for the most part–the only grades experiencing a significant growth in public school enrollment nationwide.
  • Schools are getting creative in efforts to help slow the decline in public school enrollment.
