President Day Inspiration for Little Ones

Celebrating President Day is a great way to inspire our little ones with the lives of godly heroes. It teaches our children how great leaders persevered under trial, stuck with their moral convictions, and relied on God’s Sovereignty to guide and protect them during impossible situations.

It can inspire us as mothers too revealing how great men are made from childhood. Regardless of education or economic status, cultivating a hearing ear and obedient heart towards God in our children are the foundations of greatness. Truly, a tender conscience towards God can change a nation!

Celebrating President's Day

Abraham Lincoln’s stepmother, Sarah, knew the importance of role models for her children. When she married Thomas Lincoln, she brought five books with her to the humble cabin they called home in Kentucky. One was Parson Weem’s biography of George Washington. The many stories of his moral courage stamped an indelible mark on this poor farmer boy who came to be known as “Honest Abe.” He rose to slay one of the greatest giants of injustice when he abolished slavery.

And who’s not inspired by the story about George Washington during the French and Indian War? Two horses were shot from underneath him in battle and four bullet holes passed through his coat. Comrades fell all around him left and right yet he was left unscathed. Later he wrote to his family about the miraculous protection of God, “By the all powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation.” 1

Fifteen years later an old Native American Indian Chief sat over a council fire with George Washington and confessed that he had singled him out and instructed his braves to shoot him down in that same battle. The chief told Washington that he personally had shot at him seventeen different times, but without effect.  Believing Washington to be under the care of the Great Spirit, the chief instructed his braves to stop firing at him.  “Listen! He told them, The Great Spirit protects that man, and guides his destinies — he will become the chief of nations, and a people yet unborn will hail him as the founder of a mighty empire.” 2

What richness! You won’t read that in a modern textbook.

Yes, the world is hungry for heroes! They flock to the theaters for the latest Marvel movies and action sagas. The Bible rightly says without a vision the people perish! As homeschoolers we have the calling and privilege to teach our children what can be accomplished in a life that honors God and His ways. We can cultivate a love for moral courage and a hearing ear towards God. And that is shaping them for greatness.
