Clever Writing Prompts for Elementary Students

During the summer months, it is very easy to overlook skills such as reading, writing, and math. Sticking with summer sharpeners at least 23 days a week will help keep their minds sharp. When fall rolls around, you don’t want to find yourself having to repeat skills when they should be ready to move forward with ease.

For my homeschool’s summer skills sharpening, I’ve included more writing into the mix. My kids seem to really like writing prompts. Their creativity runs wild which I absolutely love. Here are some clever writing prompts for elementary ages that your child may actually enjoy doing:

Using Music

If you have musicians in the home, music is a great way to encourage writing. Play a song  without revealing the title, and have your child write about something that could go along with the song. Creativity is endless here. It’s fun to see what they can come up with. Be sure to encourage proper grammar throughout the process.

What Would You Do if You Had 1 Million Dollars?

This is a fun and clever writing prompt. So many creative ideas can come out of this question. Encourage your homeschool student to be as creative as they can.

Minecraft Story Starters

Do you have an elementary child that can’t get enough of all things Minecraft? Believe it or not there are writing prompts that cater to this theme.

Paragraph of the Week

If you want to start small with students who aren’t really a fan of writing, try “Paragraph of the Week.” I did this with my girls and it actually caused them to want to write even more. This was a nice pleasant surprise. Be advised, it may not work the same with  your child, but it’s worth a shot. You can download ideas for narrative, informative, and persuasive writing. “ When I Grow Up I Want to Be….. ”

This may be your classic writing prompt or story starter, but it encourages putting thoughts down onto the paper. They can get as creative as possible and even make up  a job to keep the story interesting.
