Camouflage – the use of any combination of materials, coloration or illumination for concealment, either by making animals or objects hard to see (crypsis), or by disguising them as something else (mimesis). Remember that definition, you will need it in a bit.
Just a few days ago I had the pleasure of walking up the driveway to check the mail. With three homeschooled kids looking for an excuse to get out of the house, I rarely get to check the mail. However, after getting to the mailbox, I saw a stick on the top of the mailbox. It was small and sticking out at an odd angle. After looking a bit closer, the stick was a caterpillar. Now according to the definition earlier the caterpillar was exhibiting mimesis style of camouflage. After playing with the caterpillar for a bit, I let him continue on with his “hiding” and I went about my way. But this left me with a few thoughts.
In this world there are many people who are camouflaged in their daily life. There are those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol, or porn. There are people using crypsis camouflage hiding guilt, pain, despair, and depression. There are those who hide the fact that they are Christians so others don’t make fun of them. Just like that caterpillar, we try to hide in plain sight so no one will recognize us for who we really are.
Paul was one who was not camouflaged in his daily walk. After his conversion he walked the life, talked the life and lived the life of Christ. When he wrote to his friend Timothy at the church he said
8 So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me His prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God.
9 He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began
(2 Timothy 1:8-9 HCSB)
Men, we need not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, nor proclaiming that we are a follower of Jesus. For He said in Matthew 10
32 “Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven.
I think it is time that we took off the camouflage, act like and proclaim that we are a christian.
Till next time…
