What A Character

What is really meant by Deuteronomy 6:6-7?  Does this mean you follow your child around with a Bible reading to her from Genesis to Revelation then when finished start it all over again?  It certainly could…  however I think the spirit of the verse is somewhat different.  Before we move on, let me make it clear that I believe reading the Bible with your children is not just good but it’s absolutely necessary.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
– 2 Tim 3:16-17

But the real spirit of this verse is to put His commandments on your heart or to state it another way to live completely for the Lord.  Once you are committed to living for the Lord, then holiness becomes a part of your character and impressing your character on your children is always easy because you just have to be yourself.  Children watch us and hear our words when we sit at home, walk along the road, lie down and get up.  The child that hears the angry voice of his father speaking disrespectfully to his mother accepts that as the proper way to treat a spouse or a satisfactory way to deal with anger.
These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  – Deuteronomy 6:6-7
There should be no doubt in your child’s mind that you love them and you love your spouse. The Lord is compassionate and has given us a better way.  Before you lean too hard on your children, give your life to the Lord as a living sacrifice.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship.  – Romans 12:1

Then don’t preach… teach them your walk and where the Lord is taking you.
