One thing that binds every homeschooling subject together is the need for handwriting. To in some way put our thoughts in written form whether that’s a test, report, or a letter to grandma telling her how the local river got its name. The ability to write in manuscript or cursive will make our child’s life much easier in the years to come. Handwriting is one of the core homeschooling subjects we need to teach.

Yes, I did add cursive in there as a need. Being able to fluently write in cursive has shown benefits to a child’s brain and thought process. The ability to write faster will reduce frustration. And yes you parents of future drs even with tech there will be times you must write out scripts and they need to be legible. Parents of future engineers may giggle at that because all their kids are writing in careful (painfully slow) block manuscript, mine included.

We asked our fellow homeschooling Teach Them Diligently families what do you recommend as an Elementary Handwriting curriculum choice? We compiled their choices about this and 39 other levels and subjects of curriculum in our FREE Homeschool Family Favorite Guide .

TOP 10 choices for Homeschooling Elementary Handwriting Curriculum

  1. Handwriting Without Tears  From the website- “We use fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instructional methods to enable children to master handwriting as an automatic and comfortable skill.”
  2. A Reason for Handwriting  From the website- “A Reason for Handwriting®complete K-6th Handwriting Curriculum: it’s a fact that when children enjoy their lessons, learning is greatly enhanced and retention greatly increased. A Reason For Handwriting® provides a fun, meaningful approach to developing handwriting skills.”
  3. Abeka Penmanship  From the website “Each grade will give you lessons for 170 school days. Your child will have engaging books written and edited by skilled, experienced Christian educators. You’ll have teaching aids, clear lesson plans, and the option of expertly taught lessons on video.”

Learning how to write legibly and smoothly is a necessity. By the middle of elementary school many curricula have our children writing reports. By middle school they are writing out multiple reports, science experiments, etc a week. In high school things only get longer in length and more difficult. Not to mention in high school your then teen will most likely be taking a foreign language that they will need careful, clean writing skills to write out a new language. Writing is a foundation skill a lifetime of learning will be placed upon.

We are setting the foundation blocks for a lifetime of writing skills. I am encouraging that we set all children on an early path to learn writing and if obstacles come up we address them immediately.

Can you teach reading at home? In the early years of homeschooling this question was on an ever-present loop from others. No matter who I talked to whether they were family or strangers everyone wanted to be sure I could teach my child how to read. Now I chuckle and think sure I can teach my child to read, it’s more a matter of how do I find ‘the’ reading & phonics curriculum out of the slew available.

This top 10 list gives you ideas from other Teach Them Diligently families that have used these materials to teach their child or in some cases many children to read. We want you enjoy this exciting time of life. Watching the glimmer of understanding and joy fill your child’s eyes as they read for the first time is one of those life moments you won’t forget.

We asked our fellow homeschooling Teach Them Diligently families what do you recommend as an Elementary Reading & Phonics curriculum choice? We compiled their choices about this and 39 other levels and subjects of curriculum in our FREE Homeschool Family Favorite Guide .

TOP 10 choices for Elementary Reading & Phonics Curriculum

  1. Explode the Code (linked to the book at CBD)
  2. All About Reading
  3. Abeka
  4. Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (linked to the book at CBD)

What a delight we have so many options to homeschool our children through the early years of learning. If you have a wiggly child that just can’t sit still many curricula give you ideas on how to fold in something like jumping on a trampoline while singing the alphabet song. Arts and crafts that work on little fingers agility making writing easier while reinforcing phonics and word families. On the opposite end of the wiggler spectrum and you have a snuggler that wants you to read everything to them we can find curriculum to fit that too.

  1. Language Lessons for a Living Education (by Masterbooks)
  2. First Language Lessons (by Well-Trained Mind)
  3. Easy Grammar
  4. Sonlight
  5. Bob Jones University Press Phonics and Reading
  6. Rod and Staff

Let’s not forget that each child is unique and is maturing at their own rate. This can mean we try to start homeschooling at age 5 fall like the ‘local school’ but our son just doesn’t get it or can’t sit still long enough for a lesson. There is plenty of time to take a deep breath and wait. Try again in a couple weeks and for now focus on something else like science and dinosaurs.

Don’t allow the pressure of proving yourself as a homeschooling mom and teaching reading to push you or your child into trying to keep up with an artificial learning timeline.

The early years of homeschooling can be filled with fun. Read a louds on rainy days. Using finger paints with your child working on letter sounds. God gave you these wonderful little minds to tend and guide. Do so with a gentle hand and a prayer on your lips.

Now that your preteen is old enough to understand the maps of WW2 Europe it can compliment history and deepen their understanding. Add maps to your Biblical learning so your preteen knows how God used the land itself to help Gideon.

Weave these subjects into your day to day learning to make for a more balanced, better educated preteen. Look through these top 10 curriculum choices to find which ones best match your families home educating style. Try free lessons that many of these companies have available.
