Making A Difference—“Putting the Preach In Ya!”

Don’t you love it when God chooses to teach you things that you can chew on for ages??

An old, old missionary to the mountains of Kentucky spoke at our church one Sunday night while I lived in Lexington, KY.  He is the kind of man that I would love to sit down with for 30 minutes just to hear his stories and get a glimpse into his amazing heart.  He blessed my heart more than I can say– for he, who gave up all to go to one of the poorest areas of the country, felt completely unworthy to be used by his Lord.  He said as he was giving his testimony that he couldn’t imagine why God would choose to “put the preach in him” when there were so many other, better men God could have chosen. I have thought about that statement many times since then.

At first, I was simply struck by how cute it was to hear an old man say “Put the preach in me.”  But as God started bringing this statement to my mind, I realized that in truth, God has “put the preach” in all of us.  He has called all of us to spread the gospel.  I was again convicted by the many opportunities that I have squandered by hiding the “preach” God put in me.

As moms, God has given us so many natural opportunities to share God’s grace and the gospel with our children.  Are we looking for them?  We are commanded in Deuteronomy 6 to teach our children diligently. We should be pointing their little hearts to the cross as we sit in our house, and when we walk by the way, and when we lie down, and when we rise up.  Every interaction, every opportunity for discipline, and every tender caress should be filled with grace.

We really are unworthy to be called.  There really are men and women that are better– better speakers, better “livers,” better givers, etc.  But God has called ME– and God has called YOU.  Oh, fellow moms and dads– today and everyday, let’s let our children and the world around us be aware of the “preach” God has put in all of us. No greater difference could ever be made in their lives!

We have compiled a number of resources at Teach Them Diligently to walk along side you as you seek to strengthen your family through Biblical homeschooling and discipleship. How I pray you find them to be a great help to you and your family! Here are a few options to get you started:

  • Teach Them Diligently, Raising Children of Promise. God gives us countless instructions about how we as parents are to set our children on the way they should go. I pray that after the last page of this book is turned, you will walk away with a better vision for parenting your children the way God intended, with an actual game plan, and that you will have a much deeper trust in Him, confident in His ability to hold your children close as they grow. He is strong and mighty, and He loves them with an everlasting love.
  • How Praying For Your Children Will Affect The Way You Parent (and The Way You Live!) When we are strategically praying for our children, the same things we are trying to instill in them, God generally brings to our attention personally as well, drawing us closer to Himself in the process.
  • When Discipleship Turns Personal— Do you ever find that God works in your own heart… even as He is leading your conversation with your children? Yeah, me, too! 🙂
