Proverbs for Preschoolers: Worry: Blessings

Proverbs 12:25 (NLT) Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

Preschoolers are such sweet spirits. Their tender hearts can sometimes become distressed over “what if’s”, and they ask questions like “Mommy, what if the doggy gets sick? What if the fish dies?” or they can pick up on when we are worried about something.  So this exercise is a gentle teacher for our children, and a reminder for us, that worry does nothing but makes us sink and pulls us away from the God who loves us.

What you will need:

  • a small rock
  • a permanent marker
  • 2 foil “boats”
  • a container large enough to hold both boats and deep enough for one boat to sink

Bible Lesson on Worry

The story today is from Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus sent his disciples away so He could pray. They began the boat ride across the lake and as it got late, Jesus began to walk on the water toward them. The disciples became very afraid and began to say “It is a ghost!”.  Jesus told them to “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

Peter told Jesus to tell him to come out on the water with Jesus. Jesus told Peter to come. Peter began to walk on the water, but as the waves tossed around him he began to worry.

Proverbs 12:25 tells us that worry weighs a person down. When Peter began to worry and to be afraid, he began to sink down into the water and away from Jesus. He cried out to Jesus to save him. Jesus immediately took his hand and saved him. Jesus asked Peter  “Why did you doubt me?”.

When we worry, it makes us sink like Peter.

Proverbs Worry Activity

Take your two boats and write Jesus on one and Peter on the other with your permanent marker. Write “worry” on your rock. After reading the lesson to your preschooler from the Bible or the paraphrase from above, place the two boats on the water. Ask your preschooler what they think will happen when they place “worry” into Peter’s boat.

Drop “worry” into Peter’s boat and find out.

Remind your preschooler that God is for us, so there is no reason to worry. But when we worry, if we will just give our worry rocks to God, He will take them away and replace them with courage and His strength. We can always count on God!
