When people who don’t know our great God act like they don’t know Him, we should not be amazed. But, when those who claim to know Him talk and act like His Word and His ways don’t matter, we have a great reason for concern. My heart has broken this past week as I have observed pastors, leaders, and believers throwing away the truth of the scripture out of fear or self- promotion. These are truly perilous times.
The lines between good and evil are becoming very clear now, though, and for that we can be grateful. When I was younger, growing up in the Bible belt, those who didn’t know God often spoke and even acted as if they did. Now, though, it is getting much easier to tell the difference between a true child of God and one who doesn’t actually know Him. This transformation in society presents great opportunities for God’s children!
What An Opportunity For Parents!
David and I have often discussed that it is easier to parent younger children than older ones, because everything is black and white to a younger one. They have clear boundaries, and everything is clearly laid out for them. As our children get older and more mature, though, the deeper work of discipleship begins as we are teaching them how to think and helping them to understand why they believe what they believe. There are more gray areas as we navigate issues that are not clearly laid out in scripture and there are more pitfalls for them as they gain more freedom. I sometimes feel like I am swimming in a pool of gray now– with very few lines being clear.
In many cases, until recently, the lines of good and evil have been a little gray in many practical areas. Even for parents who had a feeling that something was truly wrong, it was not always easy to clearly tie that feeling to something concrete in scripture. As our society shifts to it’s new, totally secular, antagonistic to Christianity position, the gray should dissolve to a large degree leaving us with a much more clear line of distinction that Christians will have to stand upon. For that reason, it may become easier from a parenting standpoint to help our children understand those lines. Without question, though, it is becoming more important than ever that each member of our families is securely grounded in what they believe and why they believe it!
What An Opportunity For The Gospel!
I can’t help but think that clear lines will make it much easier for us to reach the lost, for many are no longer putting up any pretense of religion or Christianity or even moral goodness. Our mission field just got much more clear!
We can never forget that regardless of what society is doing or what our leaders are pushing through, God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance and enter into fellowship with God. He gave His life to make that possible. God has presented our families with an incredible opportunity to share His great love and saving grace with those around us. We cannot be sure how long we will have the freedom to speak openly about the gospel in this country, so we must be quick to act on this great opportunity. And, we must remain in prayer that God will send a great awakening to our land as His people humble themselves and pray for revival.
What Do We Do With This Opportunity?
I’ll be honest, on Friday morning, my heart was broken in two as I saw more evidence of a wholesale shift of our country away from God. My voice left me completely as I watched in sadness as those who claim to be Christians behaved as anything but via social media and other outlets. Yet, God is faithful. He alone is in control, and though I may not always understand His ways, I will trust Him in all things. From the dawn of the church age, difficult times have brought great growth, and I am eager to see what God has planned for His Kingdom through this time in which we live. I hope we all plan to take part in His work!
We started Teach Them Diligently several years ago, because God gave us a burden for Christian families. Our desire was to not only help them as they follow God’s call of home education, but even more importantly, we wanted to help equip them to disciple their children and point them to the gospel grace found only in Jesus Christ. The events that unfolded in our country last week have made that need even more heavy on our hearts, and we have prayed more deliberately than ever for families who need to have their foundations solidified and their love for God renewed to come to Teach Them Diligently Dallas.
David and I believe firmly that every Christian family needs to attend a Teach Them Diligently event, and we are praying that God will lay it on your heart to come to Dallas in 2 weeks from wherever you are. I know it’s a sacrifice, but there has never been a time in our lifetime when being grounded in your faith is more important– for you and for your children. Teach Them Diligently is specifically designed to do that.
